Hi, I’m Josie Nickum

As a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) myself, the world isn't just a place I inhabit; it’s a place I feel, deeply and constantly.

My journey began in my own psychotherapy at sixteen years old. Ten years later, I started at Western Washington University, where I earned my Master’s in School Counseling in 2016. Working with children in schools and community mental health were great teachers, and so was my own therapy. Over the last 20 years (both in my own work, and my work with others) I have learned:

  • Attachment is everything: Our earliest relationships with parents, teachers and our community set the thermostat for our nervous systems.

  • Sensitivity is often mistaken for "problem behavior": When a child (or person) is overwhelmed, they don't need "fixing"—they need a quiet container and a witness.

  • Early wounds leave a biological footprint: My work with children and families deeply informed my perspective on how we carry our history in our bodies.

My Approach:

I started my private practice in 2019 working with a wide variety of clients. Recently, I’ve pivoted my experience toward a specialty in supporting highly sensitive people. I’ve learned that being "sensitive" is a gift that is often stifled by a culture that demands we be smaller, quieter, and more "productive." In our work together, we use tools that have helped me personally, and helped my clients; these include EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Somatic work and Dream work to honor your unique wiring rather than fighting against it.

How I Stay Energized:

Outside of our sessions, I dedicate my time to advanced training, clinical consultation, and restorative practices (dream work, trail running, climbing, beach play with my daughter and watercolor painting to name a few!) I believe my responsibility as your therapist is to stay as present in our sessions as possible.
